Did anyone hear the very interesting report on NPR this morning on how various religious faiths are wrestling with the problem of evil as embodied in the tsunami? nutshell version: Why would an all-powerful and benevolent God inflict the tsunami on hundreds of thousands of people?
Roman Catholic bishop: I have no idea. I don't believe that God wants to destroy human life, but innocents do get killed along with the guilty. Buddhist monk: It's not individual Karma, the wave was a natural phenomenon. Jewish rabbi: God is not responsible and therefore must not be omnipotent. "God does not micromanage the universe." Protestant minister: We are all sinners deserving of punishment. This is God's way to call us to repent. Muslim imam: God caused the tsunami and all other earthly phenomena. We don't know why, but will find out after we die, and that answer will be satisfactory. Hindu spiritual counsellor: Hinduism permits many interpretations. Nature is God, and is angry at us for polluting, etc. According to karma, each person who was killed earned this punishment. This tragedy inspires us to come back to God. They didn't talk to any atheists, possibly because we don't have a problem? |
