I'm sorry if my wording was confusing, but I did not mean that the rebuttals of Strobel were ad hominem attacks. All I meant was that there are many ad hominem attacks from both sides, and that, incidentally to that, many of the people respected on one side are regarded as completely unscholarly by the other, such as Strobel. I think Strobel is one example of someone who deserves what's said about him by the atheistic community, but what this thread is about is to find out who is actually respectable.

Yes, he was a Jew. His beliefs are probably best described as pantheist. But he criticized belief in a personal god, and surely should be considered a rationalist. IMO, all that makes him a member of the "atheist side," broadly conceived.
