praxeus - Ron Wyatt has never been part of the archaeological issues. He's a fraud and a charlatan. Even most Christian archaeologists disown him completely.

I was looking through the arguments fundies shouldn't use at AiG, a few days ago, and I think I recall him being among them.

I should be more specific- Finkelstein and Silberman accept the existence of J and E- E they are willing to date to the period just prior to the fall of Samaria, but they down-date J to the time of Josiah. This is also the generally-accepted date of the initial compilation of the Deuteronomistic History, which they accept. This substantial down-dating of J does not allow it enough time to circulate as an independent document and then become combined with E, and gain the authoratative air of tradition with with which Deuteronomy treats it. Perhaps they are unaware of the direct dependence of Deuteronomy on the combined JE text, but this just reveals the lack of communication between archaeologists and textual critics that plagues both fields. Richard Friedman, for example, is about as unaware of the archaeological data as Finkelstein is of the textual data; both disciplines would benefit greatly if they would communicate with each other more often.

Back to the main topic, here's a review of The Exodus Decoded on BAR's website.

There are however, a lot of issues around the crucifixion site, and Ron thought the round stone that blocked the tomb was underground there (although others say it is simply a round cistern underground).

Anyway, those interested can always seek to keep up on the Bible archaelogy issues.

I see skepticism and you are not very...Close. I don't seem to recall Wyatt's claims being backed up by anyone other than his supporters, with no evidence. Seems to be rather telling.

David, AIG is not my arbitrator of integrity or truth.

I am well aware of their efforts attacking the Ron Wyatt archaeology and have looked fairly closely at their various objections (e.g. on Sodom and Gomorrah and Noah's Ark). May I suggest, if you are sincerely interested in the issues rather than simply referencing AIG as a political stance, that you do your own study on Sodom and Gomorrah to see how limited and even superficial are the attempts to discredit the sites. eg. Ask the folks specifically for where they see the claimed similar formations, ask for pictures, and try to find the sulphur balls there. Be a skeptic, in the good sense

Ironically, in a fair archaeology world, simply Ron's efforts supporting Mt. Sinai in Arabia and the Exodus crossing could qualify him for the Biblical archaeologist of the 20th century. (This was not a new idea, but he was essential in reviving it through his work starting in the 1970's). The mountain of God in Arabia is considered the prime spot today, even good ol' Herschel Shanks has a quote in that regards, and of course there are various folks who piggy-backed on those discoveries.

*yawn*. We've had this discussion probably ten times now, and everytime Wyatt's credibility is shown to be nihil and that proper archaelogists rebutted his lies years and years ago. Anyone interested should go search the arcives for some of the claims, like that sand formations were walls, even when they're quite clearly (to the trained eye) that they're nothing special. There was a good thread a while back showing nearly identical structure stroughout the world too.

Ron Wyatt was a professional fraud. His claims were exposed over and over again. Anyone doing the slightest bit of research can see what kind of con man he was and the kind of self-deluded people he preyed on.

I seem to recall praxeus leaving us last year just when challenged to defend the Ron Wyatt frauds. Gotten any archeological evidence in the past 9 months? Where did the ark of the covenant show up. Who pulled up the brass chariot wheels?

As much as I love nailing people for making baseless assertions, I think we should stay on the topic at hand. No one sane can be convinces Wyatt is anything other than hilariously mental (kinda like David Icke crazy) so I doubt it's neessary.
