Depends on the definitions.
If it's literally 'chicken' and 'egg' then obviously the egg did. If it's 'animal of a species' and 'egg of an animal of that species' then it'd usually be the egg, because if evolution took place the changes would first come out on the newborn, being the one in the egg. Exception in this would be when we're talking about the step in evolution of a non-egg-laying organism to an egg-laying one. If it's 'animals laying eggs' and 'eggs' then it'd be the animals, as explained above. |
