The solution's obvious: Noah's flood was so large and catastrophic that it also happened on Mars. Maybe God's aim just isn't what it used to be and he happened to nick our neighbor.

Another question to ask is how and why there are so many craters on the moon. When did all of this distruction happen? It seems a valid question since observed rates of meteor impacts do not coincide with a moon that's 5000 years old. Given that meteor impacts are destructive and a sign of disorder and chaos, should they not be increasing in frequency rather than decreasing in frequency? After all, I though all of the disorder in this universe arose from The Fall™. Creationists can't fall back on the idea that once there were a bunch of asteroids and debris flying around the solar system because there's no reason to think an intelligent creator would produce a solar system in such initial disarray (after all, such a solar system would severely interfere with the life he created on Earth, and he wouldn't want that, would he?). The only solutions are that God made the moon that way (here we arrive at the "why the hell would he do that?" portion of our inquiry, especially when one notes that such craters cannot be for our viewing pleasure since the portion of the moon that always faces away from us is equally scarred) or that God did that to the moon after he made it for some reason that has nothing to do with humans, even though this would go against the idea that the universe was created explitly for us. At this we are left to wonder whether perhaps God got bored by all that inactivity on the seventh day and kill the time by throwing rocks at the moon.

HA! You have just solved where all the water went . . . and probably came from . . . after the Great Flood of the Earth!!

Anyways, I had a mentor who mentioned that the "controversy" of Columbus "discovering a New World" was that it was not mentioned in the Bible! I could understand the Bible not mentioning Mars . . . but to miss a continent.

Okay . . . it does not mention Australia either . . . but that is Australia. . . .

Lob, John Morris of the ICR allegedly wrote in one of his books that the lunar craters are from the battle when Lucifer got thrown out of Heaven. That makes a lot more sense than meteors "millions of years ago," no?

So Lucifer made his stand on the moon? That's a rather unexpected solution.

I have a faint memory of reading that a couple of decades ago, but my impression is that it was Henry Morris, John's father, perhaps in the same book in which he accounted for novas by postulating that the star never really existed: the stream of light that seems to be a star, with a "blob" in it representing the (nonexistent) star going nova, was created in flight, so to speak.

Oops - my bad. It was Henry I was thinking of. The inimitable Garner Ted Armstrong apparently thought so, too:

No more ridiculous than Velikovsky . . . though given the amount of craters on the Moon, Satan did not tap out easily. . . .

It is our nature to make connections. I just watch a facinating program on black holes at the "heart" galaxies and how, probably, they were responsible for the formation of galaxies. Neat! Explain that from Genesis!

This may seem like a hijack [Seem?--Ed.] but take crop circles . . . please.

Somewhere there is a nice documentary. It shows the "woo woo" explanations--from UFOs to bizarre "energy fields." It then goes to scientists . . . and BOY do they have some bizarre explanations!

Then it shows the guys making them! I particularly like how on one side of the screen an expert states it is "impossible" to explain a particular circle since no tracks lead to it as one of the original farmers responsible pole-vaults into the middle of the field to make the very circle. While "experts" claim that certain designs mean "such and such" and are "impossible" to make by us mere humans, the farmers explain that it is their initials!

We look for the fascinating explanation--even if the real one is fascinating in and of itself.

Perhaps we are arrogant. If we "cannot explain it" it cannot have a rational explanation. The excuses for the "explanations" for crop circles reminds me of creationist arguments against evolution and for the Flood Myth--since we cannot explain it, something supernatural must have done it.

I think I might still be a Christian if their god wasn't omnipotent. It's so much more fun to imagine Satan and Yahweh slugging out out across the solar system, trading furious, ridiculously named attacks and destryong small moons in the process. The Bible could have been a kick ass pulp SF novel.

Default It's not derailing if it's gradual enough, right?

While I'd agree that the Lucifer-Yahweh match could make a damn good SF book, or even some short film (anime?), it wouldn't be the Bible. That stuff just ain't in the bible, folks (if it is and the rest of this post is all false, I'll wear my breakfast bowl and then eat cereal out of it, which is sorta like eating my hat). The whole "powers beyond our ken locked in mortal struggle" was the work of our good man John Milton in his Paradise Lost -- my AP English Lit teacher cited Paradise Lost as the first real SF novel, a perception Milton would have hated. She (AP English Lit teacher) also said that this is the story that has, more than anything else, shaped today's Western concept of Christianity. Not to mention the fact that the OT Satan/Lucifer is completely different from the NT edition: he is, according to a footnote in The New Jerusalem Bible, more of a tester of faith than the Supreme Evil™ and is doing what Yahweh has set him doing.

Crazy buncha goatherds, the lot of them...
