[Middle English, from Latin surreptcius, from surreptus, past participle of surripere, to take away secretly : sub-, secretly; see sub- + rapere, to seize; see rep- in Indo-European Roots.] It's "sir-rup-tish-us-ly." |

Well, I have a mild form of dyslexia, so I blame my wiring, but, for me it's usually multi-syllabic words where I have no idea where the emphasis goes. Two quick examples:
Apothecary. For years it was "apo-THEKary" to me. Arboretum. Yes, it was "ar-BORAH-tum." That one still hits me that way when I see it. To be fair, though, we Americans just seem to randomly pronounce words without any rhyme or reason, like Kilometer. We usually pronouce it "keh-LOM-ehter," yet we don't do the same for Centimeter or Millimeter, so either they should all be "sen-TIM-ehter" and "meh-LIM-ehter," or it should be "KILO-meeter." Go figure. |

Debacle. I know how to say it correctly, but it always seems to come out deb-a-cal.

Macabre. I mean do I say the "r" or not. What's the deal? I just avoid it.
Indubitably. Horrible word. But I would totally use it if I could pronounce it without tripping all over. |
