E.g., the young girl was not actually "sacrificed" by having her throat cut and her body burned, but was somehow "dedicated to God" and lived out her life as a virgin; or the Canaanites deserved the vengeance of God because "they practiced disgusting sexual acts (temple prostitutes, male and female, and having sex in fields to bring fertility) that would have spread venereal disease" (I heard this on a Christian radio broadcast).
Which would you rather have? The 'Christian radio' version, or the real one?

According to the Bible, Jephtha's daughter did actually die. This actual death of an 'innocent', as recorded, presages the death of Jesus, as the price of victory. It's a lesson in the necessity of sacrifice for a greater gain. The 'Christian radio' won't tell you that, will it.

According to the Bible, the Canaanites died because they did not deserve to live. And you know who else doesn't, according to the Bible? You. You don't need to be obviously evil. The 'Christian radio' won't tell you that he who makes can unmake. Life is a gift, not a right, by the Bible; which may come as a nasty surprise in the USA.

So, what's your choice?

So yet again we get sotto voce as being the world's one and only remaining true™ christian.

Every nutty xtian I run into think that they and they alone are True Xtians.

Such people should be locked up and heavily medicated.

Quote:

Many years ago at the University of Notre Dame the brilliant philosopher/theologian Philip Devenish gave a lecture provocatively titled with the question: “Can a Christian Be A Historian?” Devenish’s response was essentially “no,” assuming one defines a “Christian” by the affirmations of the traditional creeds–that Jesus was born of a virgin, raised from the dead, ascended bodily into heaven where he sits at the right hand of God, ready to return in the clouds of heaven and usher in the last judgment. Devenish argued that this is not and can not be the stuff of historical investigation, of Jesus or any other human being of the past. We can talk about the development of ideas, theological or otherwise, but no historian can take literally tales of gods impregnating women, walking on water, turning water to wine, dead people being resuscitated and taken bodily to heaven, or any other mythological story. There is nothing wrong with myth–unless you confuse it with history!

Devenish was of course familiar with ways of “demythologizing” these Creedal statements, and indeed Bultmann was one of his heroes, along with Hartshorne and his teacher Shubert Ogden. His point was that unless Christians are willing to take seriously the differences between “myth and history” they were bound to end up “outside” the bounds of the academic study of religions.
.

How to disagree with Devenish?..

Everyone must choose.
And when the Ephraimites came down to the passages with thought to pass over that Jordan, the gift of the Word Life, which would have allowed them safe passage, and to live, was not to be found on their lips.
For they were not careful of their speech, and handled The Word of Life, even The Word of יהוה האלהים carelessly and deceitfully.
So perished forty-two thousand Ephraimites, who thought themselves to be Israelites, by the corrupted and insufficient word of their own lips. For they would not frame their lips to pronounce it:

And this thing happened to them as an example, and was set down in writing, to warn US, and for an admonition to US, lest WE should likewise allow our WORD of life to likewise so become corrupted, and so fail in the day of our testing.

Forty-two is a symbolic number in Scripture, signifying the carrying out of that vengeance which is from on High.
In the shibboleth tale it is multiplied a thousandfold, for a permanent WARNING. And you have been WARNED.

You may ignore this warning and speak your own more popular chosen corrupted word at your peril.
The power of life or death, deliverance or destruction IS on your lips.

Choose wisely what manner of pass WORD it is that you will utter.

ששבצר העברי איש־ישראל למטה־גלעדי צפה ליהוה וגאל־להאדון יהושע המשיח׃
כי־יודע יהוה את כל־הדברים אשר עשה׃

If you won't hear it, you are in for a nasty surprise, man who wraps him-self in his false religion.

Update on Rollston:

Bibliobloggers and academics are rallying to his support (see this list.)

The most bizarre reaction: Simcha Jacobovici

In the past, I had pointed out that many of the professors attacking our findings e.g., the Talpiot tomb, or the Jonah inscription, are not working for institutions where academic freedom is the keyword. Rather, they are working for theologically driven institutions and their job is to promote specific theological agendas. In other words, behind the academic title is a theological agenda. One of our critics has been Prof. Christopher Rollston who teaches at Emmanuel Christian Seminary. Recently, Prof. Rollston wrote an opinion article for the Huffington Post talking about women and the bible. The Seminary didn’t like it and this tenured professor is now being asked to look for a job elsewhere. I rest my case.

By some quirky coincidence, just as I got to this posting, Jay Leno in one of his "Jaywalking" outings was trying to get some schmuck on a Los Angeles street to complete the phrase "Nutty as a ...."

Who says supernatural forces don't exist?!
