Did you let your son try to tie his shoe because he wanted to try it on his own for once?

Or did you set a rule that your son must learn to tie his own shoes or face punishment, and then let him try and fail- and then demand that he admit to being utterly incapable of ever learning to tie his own shoe, and be dependant on you to tie his shoe for the rest of his life?

How exactly is it good parenting to set rules that you know cannot be followed, along with punishments for breaking them, for the purpose of making your children fail when they try to live up to your standards?

That's one hell of a bundle of straw. The rev did not mention punishing his son.; He offered help, the boy refused, the boy tried, the boy failed, the rev helped. It's just like God...except the rev actually helps and offers help....and doesn't punish his son for failing....yeah.

Yes, that appears to be what happened. See the first paragraph of my post.

Yes, those would be differences between God and the reverend, thus causing problems for the analogy. See the second paragraph of my post.
