Keep in mind I wouldn't argue against a post-exilic (or exilic) 'Deuteronomist'. But the simple explanation, from a literary perspective, is that the doublets and triplets reflect the text's strategy rather than its strata. Repetition and parallels in a unified narrative to emphasize a point were hot commodities in the ancient world (see R. Alter's The Art of Biblical Narrative, pp. 47–62; and T.L. Thompson, The Origin Tradition of Ancient Israel, p. 59).

Any discussion about the apparently contradictory doublets must go case-by-case. I've just set the cat about the pigeons, that's all.
The simple fact is, the majority of form and tradition critics have not reached any sort of consensus. One begins to wonder if the methodology has not shown itself to be woefully inadequate … |
