One intriguing find at Gath is the remains of a large structure, possibly a temple, with two pillars. Maeir has suggested that this might have been a known design element in Philistine temple architecture when it was written into the Samson story.
This shows some relative restraint. Twenty years ago they would have triumphantly proclaimed it as the temple pulled down by Sampson.

This archaeological dig has it's own weblog at The Tell es-Safi/Gath Excavations Official (and Unofficial) Weblog. The site's "site" is a lot less "OOoooh, we found Goliath" than the articles imply.

Joseph Heller wrote a novel titled "God Knows" which is a humourous history of David narrated by Dave himself.
In it he pictures Goliath as being at a hopeless disadvantage against Dave's sling, a vastly superior weapon in the circumstances.
Dave says: "The poor dumb schmuck never knew what hit him!"

Its an entertaining read which many here may appreciate.

Yeah, using the sling was actually cheating. It was equivalent to using a gun in a sword fight. The weapon referred to wasn't some kind of comical Bart Simpson slingshot, but a very effective and deadly ballistic.

Cheating in war..I have never really understood that concept.

It is interesting that in some areas man is becoming more "civilized" as
a function of time, doing away with slavery and the like, war is an
area in which "rules" are minimized, and things seem to boil down to
"destroy the enemy by any means possible"

One looks at the "prize rools tha subs were supposed to operate under
in WW1, and they look so unrealistic in light of what was to come...

That's actually fairly common. The web site isn't worried about writing sensationalized headlines that they can't back up.

Biblical Bad Guy

Quote:
Any one of thousands of smooth stones being excavated at Gath could be the one that toppled Goliath, the giant conquered by David via a slingshot outside the city.

While David went on to become the King of Israel, Goliath died on the spot (the beheading helped speed that process along) and with his death came the defeat of the Philistine people, as told in Chapter 17 of the Book of Samuel—as the Israelites chased them back to their home at Gath.

...
This article links to one that starts:
Quote:
The Jerusalem syndrome is a psychological disorder in which a visit to the holy city triggers delusional and obsessive religious fantasies. In its extreme variety, people wander the lanes of the Old City believing they are biblical characters; John the Baptist, say, or a brawny Samson, sprung back to life.

Archaeologists in the Holy Land like to joke that their profession is vulnerable to a milder form of the syndrome. When scientists find a cracked, oversize skull in the Valley of Elah, it can be hard to resist the thought that it might have belonged to Goliath, or to imagine, while excavating the cellars of a Byzantine church, that the discovery of a few wooden splinters might be part of the cross on which Christ died....
Indeed.
