Actually Ty, I don't think it was widespread, at least not before the advent of Xtianity. In any case, any pre-Xtian influence on the Romans pretty much had to come from their exposure to Hellenistic Greece.

These are more Zoroastrianism in origin than Hebrew.
That's all that needs to be said, right there. Its an air-tight argument as far as I can tell. Christians need a jet-pack and a crooked lawyer to make sense out of their theology of heaven and hell.
