Hi Peter,
Can you give me the rules & conditions for the proposed analysis on Doherty's book, either privately or on this board?

The "rules" were stated in flowery language above, and will be made clear in bullet form now:

1. I give you a free book (via airmail). (Actually I paid for it.)
2. You read the free book (all of it, in any sequence).
3. You read some of the free web site for clarification and for later use if you want (again in any sequence).
4. You think about it.
5. You have been writing down thoughts as you read and thought of course. Go to 2 (lather, rinse, repeat).
6. You compile these thoughts into a text file of a 1000 word count or higher, including the count of 1000.
7. You send this text file to me within 180 days of getting the free book, including the 181st day.
8. I post on DidJesusExist.com exactly what you sent me (without my own commentary there) within 48 hours of receiving the text file, not including the so-called "eleventh hour."
9. I announce this web page to Biblical Criticism & History and Jesus Mysteries.
10. You tell whoever you want, republish wherever you want, you have copyright, I have permission to publish.
11. The world sees Doherty exposed as a fraud, vindicated as a genius, somewhere inbetween, a combination of the two, or none of the above.
12. You get publicity and feedback (in either order) on your web site. Also free.
13. You get another piece of the question to which the answer is 42. A gift, but not from me.

It's as generous as I can think, is the principle on which I made the "rules." (I know, my background as a programmer shows.) This is geek speek for "do whatever you want." You can quote from any web site on the Internet, and quote from as little from the book as necessary to discuss Doherty's ideas. You can quote nothing at all and paraphrase all concepts, if that were your writing style. The form and expression are your design, not mine.

Fact: the differences between the two editions are minutiae, make less than 5 pages difference if that, and are documented in the corrigenda published (when I looked) on Doherty's site. Doherty's publisher (Canadian Humanists) was very strict about the length of the book, which caused a minimum of footnotes with very small margins so the book can be produced and shipped--most importantly shipped from Canada from the perspective of the second edition, as Doherty will sign your book maybe--cheaply. If you like, I can give you the reading of the original (or 1999) edition if it is a point of concern to you for determining how Doherty's thought developed over time, such as it is. It is still a masterpiece, the best "popularization" book on the NT for a humanist written in the past 10 years for a fact, a "popularization" with a genuine point of view and lots of facts and fresh interpretation to back it up, yet with a grand view of the whole scheme of Ur-Chistentums. Certainly it has been the most influential in our circles. That's what I want you to consider as a possibility going in, but those are just "my facts" if you like. Again, it is your work entirely, on the NT and history according to Doherty. It's all about a book on "The Book," and how you read the later book in light of the earlier book, as it were--but that's the way I think about it right now, not the way you have to think about it.

There are no tricks. This is just how I speak in electronic form on IIDB. The irony of "Quid pro quo" is that I designed it, but I tailored it to you. My repayment is the enrichment of everybody.

We both show up under Google on the first page for "Historical Jesus," and Google smiles upon us both. Google is the gold standard of importance in the present, so this will truly be a "Clash of the Titans." Nudge nudge, wink wink.

What do you mean by that?
Two days ago we were colleagues, now enemies. And what are your colors: you almost sound like a mythicist (or maybe a Chritian, both I am not).
That and your later post on another board (about Jim's prophecies) make me wonder about your mental stability.

I hope to have clarification on that before I decide, which I was very close to do, positively, but I do not want to get into a fight to death, if it is what you think.
