What a bunch of absolute shit!
From what I have heard IM and hotmail will still be around but free chat rooms (which I used to like chatting in the twin cities room!!!!) are gone, unless you pay Macro$hit for some service - they want your CC# to track you down! Ok so one of the reasons they SAY they are doing this is to cut down on the perverts who prowl the chat rooms.. ok do you think this little measure is going to really stop a determined pedophile? NO Another reason, Microsofts revenues are down... WHAT MICRO$OFT ISN'T MAKING ENOUGH MONEY - WHA... DO THEY THINK WE ARE COMPLETE IDIOTS!!!! ITS MICRO$OFT FOR-FUXSAKE!!!! (deep breaths) Ok really if a parent has an MSN account and their kids have access to their computer (login info) they will be able to get into the rooms with mommy or daddies account - therefore rendering this little motion pointless. SECURITY IS AN ILLUSION YOU DOLTS!!! You can not protect anyone all of the time. If people complain about thier kids getting solicited online DON'T LET THEM SURF UNSUPERVISED!!!!!!!! Like keep the PC in the living room and that way you can see what is going on! This is a motion to reduce liability and boost revenues - which really do you think it is going to boost revenues that much... NO ok time to go get more coffee... |

B34RZ0R, I don't get your point.
Microsoft is a company. By definition, it exists to make money. A company that doesn't make money (i.e. create value for the investor) is by definition a bad one. Even if, obviously, the loss of free chat rooms sponsored by Microsoft will not really do anything about child pornography or similar problems, a case can be easily build around the fact that Microsoft may not want to be associated with such problems or accused by third party of "helping" such actions. They may have decided that the value gained by offering free chat rooms is dwarfed by the cost of potential future lawsuit, or whatever. So I really don't understand your anger. From a security point of view, sure, Microsoft has a case. |

MSN Messenger will still be available, but MSN Chat access will be limited to those people who pay for at least one MSN service. (I pay for Hotmail Extra Storage, I will be able to use Chat.)
However, the chat rooms that remain won't be the same. They'll be under MSN dictatorship. I am the Owner and Host of MSN's "God is a Lie" chat community, an affiliate of Atheist Network. Most of our Hosts and chatters are not paying for any MSN services and will therefore lose access to chat. We've been adding each other to Messenger. The Atheist Network has its own chat module, a Java-based application that some users dislike due to lag. Most of the GIAL community will migrate to the AN's chat. I'm not sure what members of MSN's Ask An Atheist community will do when they lose their chat room; AAA recently went dot-com (http://www.ask-an-atheist.com) but I don't think they have a web-based chat. For more details, check out the CNN story on MSN Closing chats: http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/interne...hat/index.html As stated in previous posts to this thread, Microsoft claims that they're closing chats because of pedos and pornbots. It's a lie. They aren't making money from the free chat rooms. People like me who run our own chat rooms deal with the issue in our own ways; ironically, MSN Sysop-hosted chats are overrun with pornbots. There is, of course, a petition against the MSN Chat closing: http://www.petitiononline.com/msnchat/petition.html Finally, like many of you, I also use Trillian. Trillian lets me have an AIM nic (moodymommy420) without being an AOL user, a Yahoo nic (the_real_stopper), and MSN Messenger ([email protected]) all on one little convenient connection. Trillian is freeware and you can get it here: http://www.trillian.cc (I pay for Trillian Pro and I love it). -Janice Rael |

I know Micro$qui$h is a company and therefore out to make money, the anger expressed over them complaining about sagging profits is what gets to me. They are currently the number one homePC and Corp desktop OS manufacturer - They are by no means HURTING for cash. Part of me doesn't really care because half the time I would go into the chat rooms it would be so lame I would just leave and other times I would have a grand ol' time. When you work overnights and stay up on the weekend, it can help to have that interaction between like 2 am and 6:30! Ok off to another thread.... |
