Don't know if I'd rank the whole movie among the "most beautiful ever made", but I've always thought the Jupiter/Io/Europa scenes in 2010 were gorgeous. I'm no astronomer/physicist, but those scenes just had a real "you are there" feel about them (especially when you hit Mute to turn off the whooshing spacecraft).

I forgot one of my favorites:

The Black Stallion

The island scenes in particular. Simply beautiful.

Someone already nominated "The Thin Red Line'. But I think Terrence Malick's most beautiful film is "Days of Heaven". All the key scenes are staged to look like famous American paintings. The movies is visually stunning (and with a young Richard Gere and Brooke Adams playing the leads, the actors are pretty, too).

Here's a link to a Roger Ebert review: http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/greatmovies/heaven.html

Amelie was beautiful (referring to both the cinematography and the girl), and the soundtrack is equally so. Never thought I'd call music with an accordian beautiful, but I do.

Never heard the tango, I guess.

Like I said, goodness, moral rightness, or other "quality" characteristics don't count here. As an aesthetic statement, that film was a triumph. Otherwise, not so much.

(Yimou is big into propoganda.)

Yep, this was his big apology to the People's Congress.

However, if we are constrained to ignore the political, I also found the movie had about the same aesthetic appeal as a commercial - sure it looked nice, but it was glossy and slick and overly repetetive in its imagery.

I much preferred Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

And it had a great story to boot! It also remained serious and relatively realistic. Hero was great as an action movie, but sometimes the fights get a little too silly, like when they bat little drops of water at each other. I liked the intro fight, because it was devoid of silliness and most resembled Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
