Don't know if I'd rank the whole movie among the "most beautiful ever made", but I've always thought the Jupiter/Io/Europa scenes in 2010 were gorgeous. I'm no astronomer/physicist, but those scenes just had a real "you are there" feel about them (especially when you hit Mute to turn off the whooshing spacecraft).

I forgot one of my favorites:
The Black Stallion The island scenes in particular. Simply beautiful. |

Someone already nominated "The Thin Red Line'. But I think Terrence Malick's most beautiful film is "Days of Heaven". All the key scenes are staged to look like famous American paintings. The movies is visually stunning (and with a young Richard Gere and Brooke Adams playing the leads, the actors are pretty, too).

Amelie was beautiful (referring to both the cinematography and the girl), and the soundtrack is equally so. Never thought I'd call music with an accordian beautiful, but I do.

However, if we are constrained to ignore the political, I also found the movie had about the same aesthetic appeal as a commercial - sure it looked nice, but it was glossy and slick and overly repetetive in its imagery. I much preferred Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. |
