After watching the story on CNN while at lunch I want to summarize our state school superintendent argument.

"We are not teaching that monkey-to-man crap, and we replaced the buzzword 'evolution' to ensure that people don't think we are."

No joke. That was her fucking argument!

This I've gotta see, an argument that was screwed from the git-go!

Or perhaps she was making a case for monkey-human relationships . . .

S2Focus,

My response to the proposed state school standards omitting evolution is simple: As head of advising for the biology major at the University of Georgia, I will recommend that we not give advance placement credit for college-level introductory biology, regardless of test score, to students who take biology in Georgia high schools.
That is beautiful! This kind of letter carries great weight. If more people involved in the admission requirements sector of higher-ed are heard, their message will become clear. There are consequences to these actions.

And to RufusAtticus,

Fantastic job on getting the ball rolling. And as a side note, who exactly was the "Mother of God?"

For this quotation that you piosted the other day:

Over 500 signatures now!

There is also good news on the curriculum front:

quote:The University System of Georgia Board of Regents has called
for a close examination of the new curriculum by our faculty, and
particularly by the USG Academic Committees in each discipline
affected. Reportedly the DoE has actually asked for feedback (better
late than never?!). Since you all have been on the front lines of
the issue, please pass any relevant information such as the AAAS/GA
comparisons on to your Academic Cmtee reps (or volunteer to help them write the response).

Course, you can just hear the screams of intimidation and censorship from the creationists, who will just see this letter as evidence that the Great Atheist Conspiracy is closing ranks. However, the point isn't what they think about it, the point is to get across to the undecided majority what's actually going on. I've posted the link to the petition at a non-topic-specific discussion board that's got a thread running about this, and a few people have said they've signed up. I've also made the point there that despite what's being said, replacing terminology is by no means all that's being proposed. That seemed to be news to a few people too.

This came from a professor who is a member of GCISE.

I don't think the news knows about it.

The petition is on a tear! 2000+ sigs so far

I believe that is double what it had yesterday.

It is now showing up on Google, so people can probably find it better if they're not getting it via email.
Make that 3170+ sigs...

Eyeball estimate from the timestamps of our posts: over 200 sigs per hour...

Thumbs up

I just love PZ's comments on the Discovery Institute's press release.

Quote:
What they are really saying here is that they've managed to scrape up a paltry 35 scientists and educators in all fields (I would be willing to bet that damn few of them are at all qualified in biology), in a state that has one of the poorest reputations for good science education in the country, who want to teach religious dogma in the science classroom. Thirty five is pathetic. There are thousands of highly qualified, well-educated, intelligent biologists working in Georgia who oppose the kind of crap the Discovery Institute is excreting. Just this one online petition to oppose the anti-evolution bias of Georgia's education commissioner has already acquired over two thousand [no] three thousand signatories in the span of a few days, and is growing by hundreds every day [no] hour. Finding thirty five kooks is nothing.
