In Mark 3:18, Simon is referred to as the Zealot (denoting a sect), pronounced as kä-nä-nī'-os (according to BLB). The KJV translators translated this as 'Canaanite'..presumably because it sounds so similar? In Matthew 15:22, we see the word Canaanite used to refer to someone from the area of Canaan, pronounced khä-nä-nī'-os (BLB again).
Is the author of Mark using puns, intentionally playing fast and loose with sect names and names of cities? |
