Default Another book

Here's a book--noticed while checking the one mentioned in the o.p.--that will probably knock the piss out of the hystericists we have here: Jesus, Criteria, and the Demise of Authenticity (or via: amazon.co.uk) ed. Chris Keith & Anthony Le Donne, T&T Clark 2012 ISBN 978-0567377234. It will include such juicy topics as:
  1. Loren T. Stuckenbruck, "Semitic influence on Greek": an Authenticating criterion in Jesus Research?
  2. Rafael Rodriguez, The Embarrassing Truth about Jesus: The Criterion of Embarrassment and the Failure of Historical Authenticity
  3. Mark Goodacre, Criticizing the Criterion of Multiple Attestation: The Historical Jesus and the Question of Sources
I can hardly wait to hear the whinging of those who drone on about embarrassment and claims of multiple attestation.

Origen claimed 1600 hundred years ago that Jesus was NOT described as a carpenter in the extant gospels of the Church.

Perhaps, Jesus became a carpenter by "Chinese Whispers".

Well, of course.

But one historicist argument has always been that a character like Jesus just couldn't have been invented (because Christians were unsophisticated fisherman, or there wasn't enough time between the date of the gospels and the time of the alleged crucifixion.) Legion is arguing that in another thread that is active now.
Who hacked my account? I don't recall ever arguing that Jesus was likely historical based on character creation or any of what you attribute to me. Assuming that you are referring to the thread concerning ancient historiography and narrative, the issue is not the character or even the literary quality of the gospels. Rather, given its literary quality, I argued that the author of Mark is unlikely to have created a novel genre which combined the narrative of biography/history and various fictional forms. The work on narrative and genre is incredibly extensive, and includes a great deal of research into Greco-Roman literary forms. A basis of my argument is that Mark (which lacks the literary quality of novels or even better historical narratives) could hardly be the product of an individual whose literary capacity enabled the creation of an extension to historical narratives via the combination of such works with ahistorical texts.
