...Ok its a sin... but in what context? Lust has to be the precursor to sex, and therefore procreation, so is this a trap or what? Is it ok to lust over your wife? Can you have sex for pleasure (and not procreation) with your wife? (I know how the Pope feels about contraception). Or is it excess thats the problem. This one has me puzzled, along with pride and sloth(it seems sloth was added if some smart sob said "fine, everything seems to be a sin, so ill just sit here and do nothing").

I believe the standard issue response to issue surround having sex, is that you have sex to have children. Anything else is a sin, infact I'd imagine that having pleasure while having sex (whether its to have kiddies or not) is a sin.
Sex should not be enjoyed!! As for slobs well, free riders and people whom get wealthy from others is bad. Oddly enough the papacy is quite rich...I wonder where all that money came from... So yes I'd imagine half the things that God lays down is a trap, dammed if you do, dammed if you don't and most definitely damned if you think for yourself! |

I think context is important when mentioning biblical references to lust. Remember that multiple wives were the norm then, as were concubines.

Okay, let's start with the big misconception first.
NOT ALL SEXUAL DESIRE IS LUST. When you're talking about "sins", the short names are generally terms of art. The sin of "pride" does not refer to self-esteem. The sin of "lust" does not refer to sexual desire. A slightly better, but still soundbite-ridden, explanation is that "lust" is when you want a body instead of a person. Basically... If sexual desire is taking over and replacing your better judgment, that's often considered a problem. Merely having desires is not a problem, and, if the context is appropriate, neither is acting on them. Or, to cite a headline from The Onion... "Lutheran Minister Loves to Fuck His Wife". |
