anders, if 'sin' comes from a PIE root that means 'to be' does that mean speakers of PIE believed in original sin?

That's an original thought, but I think it means that sin is in the world, and that it is outright stupid to think that it can be totally avoided or should be punished on every occurrence.

PS
For more views on original sin, search the Internet for "Vatican Rag".

Few etymologic dictionaries are brave enough to trace sin and saint back to Proto-Indo-European. Those that do (e.g. The American Heritage Dictionary of Indo-European roots) tend to take sin from the PIE root *es-, meaning 'to be', and saint from a root *sak- 'to sanctify. Those that don't make it clear that even the immediate ancestors of those words are different.

For Sintflut I might add that the prefix is found in most Germanic languages, giving meanings like 'enormous, complete(ly)': Old English sin(a)-, Gothic sin-, Old Icelandic sî-.

The limbic connection is that Limbo and limbic both are derived from Latin limbus 'edge, verge, fringe'.
No, I am not joking, really, but I will not open a dictionary on it either. I see the flood as a metaphor and metaphor only which is endured by those who are both ark builder and sinner. Notice that we must be both, saint and sinner or there can be no flood to erase this contradiction in our life . I guess the ark is built through tithing towards the city of Nazareth while the rest of our time is spend in Limbo where we gather a wealth of animals that we must want to rescue in the ark so our sins may be purified to become riches in heaven once we get there.

I use the word Limbo for "fringe" as in "voorgeborgte" that can only be a fringe if it is adjacent to Nazareth that is needed to make Limbo the huge hinterland (90%) to be uploaded in the ark. Whatever is loaded in the ark is preserved unto Nazareth of Galilee in wait for the 'coast to clear' so it can be unloaded in Capernaum along the sea in heathen Galilee where the kingdom of heaven is rebuilt.

Note that Limbo is good but is not limbic without its connection to Nazareth in the Gospels. In Catholicism we have replaced Nazareth with Rome and our daily masses represent our tithes to Rome to keep the connection intact.

We actually have replaced the Flood with the Advent period.

Sin is good!

Vatican Rag?

How can the Vatican be a rag if sin is good? Since all is created in sin, sins must be collected and used to redecorate the image of Rome each generation anew by those who used and abused her.

I did, like it, and am proud of it! It's a great game and good for the soul.

VATICAN RAG
(Tom Lehrer)

First get down on your knees
Fiddle with your rosary beads
Bow your head with great respect
Then genuflect, genuflect, genuflect

Do most any step you want if
You have cleared it with the Pontiff
Everybody say his own
Kyrie Elieson

Get into that small confessional
Step in line in that processional
There the guy who's got religion'll
Tell you if your sin's original

If it is, try playing it safer
Drink the wine and chew the wafer
Two- four- six- eight
Time to transubstantiate

Make a cross on your abdomen
When in Rome do like a Roman
Ave Maria,
Gee, it's good to see you
Doing the Vatican Rag
