Thanks for that clarification, any idea on the date of our oldest extant manuscript?

Did the Bishop READ and WRITE, as well, Coptic? I know from the Wikipedia article, that he was fluent in Coptic. I am thinking about the numerous Coptic texts, such as those found in the 20th century, in the Egyptian desert, buried in the fourth century at Nag Hammadi. Does Severus of Al'Ashmunein cite any ancient Coptic references, perhaps cross referencing texts excavated in 1945?

This is a French translation from the early 20th century.
Thanks for clearing that up. I suppose there may be extant tenth century French texts lying about, but, the oldest that I have seen, dates from eleventh-twelfth century: Chanson by Guillaume IX, Duc D'Aquitaine et Comte de Poitiers, printed in the lovely Le Livre d'Or de la Poesie francaise.

Perhaps so, quite possible. But, is it not also important to recognize that two very important influences may have shaped the text available to us: Islam, and the Crusades...? What of the invasion of Napolean in the late 18th century, when so many "discoveries" were made, including the Rosetta stone, itself?

In other words, more than a few folks, throughout history, have endeavored to control the Nile, and, as well, the ideology flowing from that mighty force, as it exits the continent, emptying into the Mediterranean Sea.

Stephan! I'm following your logic here....

I think St. Paul and St Mark were one and the same person

And, NO, 'Paul' is not Agrippa (II). 'Paul', to my thinking, is a composite figure, like JC. - hence cannot be equated with only one historical figure. Agrippa (II) might well be the 'later Paul' writer - but that there was an 'earlier Paul' is a possibility. 'Paul' stating that he was late on the scene. The NT 'Paul' story being a fusing of two traditions regarding "Paul". Early, pre-70 ce. and later.

I'm OK with 'Mark' being a pseudonym for Marcus Julius Agrippa (II) - though to equate that pseudonym with the 'Mark' in the gospel story is something else. And, of course, if Marcus Julius Agrippa (II) is in the business of using pseudonyms then who knows what other names he chose to go by...

The French translator also mentions two lost books on Paul's travels by Nicephorus. I will have to reproduce his comments at some point.
