There seems to me to be perfect consistency between the myth of the resurrection and the myth of the return. They are both natural sentiments for a disappointed group of rebels who believed Jesus would rid Judea and Galilee of the Roman occupation and be crowned King as a direct descendant of David, in place of Roman puppet appointees.
The similarities to Iraq and Afghanistan today are interesting. |

Somehow the symbolism of a boot coming down on a statue of Christ, shaped like an ant, as he cowers behind a blade of grass isn't as picturesque as him in human form dangling from nails on a big wooden T with blood dripping. |

A less cartoonish version is something akin to what Chilli said. When I read Paul, I do not primarily see a Jesus of history planning to return riding a horse (in the sky). Instead, I see Jesus as figuratively representing the ego. From that perspective, the arrival of Jesus is not some distant future event, but something that happens to every Christians when they finally "crucify" their ego and become a new creation as a result (the resurrection). |
