curious though that Archelaus's orthodoxy is grounded in the Marcionite notion of Paul = paraclete. that's what tips the scales IMO. Mani is there to convince 'Marcellus' through Archelaus that the traditional orthodoxy (Paul = paraclete) is imperfect. Paul, says Mani, admits that he "prophesied only in part." The perfect or complete understanding is that the gospel testifies not to Paul but to Mani as the awaited Paraclete.
why would Mani appeal his message to anyone but Marcion for that specific purpose? |
