In the past, there have been some threads on topics such as "Who was the most influential philosopher of all time" and "What books would you recommend as an introduction to philosophy." So, this time around, I want to ask: what authors/works have been most influential on your personal thought?
I'll start! (This list is a little long...) In the philosophy of language and logic: "On the Very Idea of a Conceptual Scheme" -Donald Davidson "The Search for Logically Alien Thought" -James Conant "What is Logic?" -Ian Hacking In metaethics: "Mathematical Truth" -Paul Benacerraf Freedom and Reason -R.M. Hare Principia Ethica -G.E. Moore In normative ethics: "Virtue Ethics and Abortion" -Rosalind Hursthouse "Freedom of the Will and the Concept of a Person" -Harry Frankfurt In political theory: The Social Contract -Jean-Jacques Rousseau Political Liberalism -John Rawls |
