Does anyone have any suggestions. I've been searching, but unable to decide on anything.
Thanks, Eric |

H.L. Mencken's Treatise on the Gods is a classic.

My personal favorite is George H. Smith's, Atheism: The Case Against God.

Excellent starter: Atheism: A very short introduction by Julian Baggini More advanced exploration of atheism: The Cambridge Companion to Atheism edited by Michael Martin (Includes statistics about and profiles for atheists as well as brief arguments for and against atheism.) Philosophers talking about their atheism: Philosophers without Gods: Meditations on Atheism and the Secular Life (Contains interesting arguments I hadn't read before.) Naturalistic world views: Sense and Goodness Without God: A Defense of Metaphysical Naturalism by Richard Carrier Encountering Naturalism: A Worldview and Its Uses by Thomas W. Clark A heavy philosophical defense of atheism: Atheism: A Philosophical Justification by Michael Martin (These are structured, logical arguments to atheism.) Brand-spanking new: Why I Became an Atheist: A Former Preacher Rejects Christianity by John W. Loftus (I'm still reading the last, but I don't feel at all hesitant to recommend it. Many of the atheist books written in the last couple of years have been screeds instead of calm arguments -- this book is a cut above.) If you want to start somewhere light, you can't go wrong with Julian Baggini's book or Thomas W. Clarke's book, because they are small, yet pack a pretty big punch, pound-for-pound. So does Loftus's book come to think of it. If you so desire you can purchase books through the Secular Web -- I think they get a kickback. |

I'll definitely look into these. I was also suggested some of Carl Sagan's books (e.g., Demon Haunted World & The Varieties of Scientific Experience: A Personal View of the Search for God).
Are these worth it? Thanks, E.L.B. |
