The other day on the radio I heard somebody say that, of all the world's major religions, Judaism and Islam were more similar than any two other religions. I could see at once why he would say that, but nonetheless I began thinking about other examples that might refute his assertion. I thought that perhaps Buddhism and Jainism might be more similar than Judaism and Islam.
What do you think? Out of all the major religions, which pair do you think would show the greatest similarity? |

They're all a little different from each other, or they wouldn't be separate religions. Besides what's a good way to compare anyway?

I think I may well agree (of course there's no answer that is definitely right). Judaism and Islam are quite similar, although it does depend on what form of Judaism you're talking about. Of the branches of Judaism around today, only Orthodox Jews are anything like as conservative as the average of mainstream Islam, and that keeps the Jews of other sects from being very similar.
If you bring in the ancient pagan religions, they're formed through tradition to a great degree, and so they blend into each other gradually. So the religions of, say, Babylon and Assyria might have been quite similar to each other, while both we and the ancients would have seen them as two different religions. |
