Andrew Criddle
The author of 2 Peter does not show at all that he is dubious about using the Pauline writings because it is actually stated that they were words of wisdom given unto Paul.

2 Peter 3
Quote:
14Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 15And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you...
Why are you making blunder after blunder??

The author of the forgery recommended the Pauline letters.

2 Peter 3
Quote:
17Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before , beware lest ye also , being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.

Evidence of this 'widespread' knowledge? Or possibly most Christians did not accept that these widespread teachings were genuine?

Perhaps people were using Paul to claim that Jesus was a creature from scipture?
