Hi Coleslaw - welcome to II if no one has welcomed you yet.

The Secular Web/Internet Infidels operate this board, which costs money. One source of money is Amazon.com - we are an Amazon associate, which means that if people follow a properly constructed link from this board to Amazon and buy something, we get a percentage.

If you want to provide your own Amazon links, you can use the Amazon tag [ amazon = 9999999999 ] Book Title [ / amazon ] (without the spaces, and with the ISDN number for the 99999999.) If you add an Amazon link without this format, we will not get credit.

You can support this board financially by starting your shopping at Amazon by clicking the little Amazon square at the bottom of this page on the right, or by just donating money (you can use the little Paypal square on the left at the bottom.)

Thanks for asking.

iirc, "docetism" is the notion that, while Jesus "looked like" a human being, he wasn't "really" or "fully" human, more of an outward shell containing the perfect god within it. I think this was a gnostic idea to explain how the "divine" could have appeared as Jesus. I think.

ETA: woop, you're quick David.

Sorry. But you did get a good response from maddog. Docetics put Jesus on a pedestal. Kinda, well, maybe he had feet but they didn't touch the dirt. The genealogy has lost of dirt. Remember the question on GRD about whether Jesus had morning wood? Gross but that sort of thing.

Those who make typos shouldn't throw stones.

I presume you mean 'lots' as opposed to 'lost'.

But if god is the father, where do genealogies of Joseph come in?

You'll notice it doesn't say Joseph is Jesus' father. Maybe that's the point.

Yup I have noticed that it doesn't say that Joseph was the father. But, if not to imply that he was, why give the genealogy?

What point are you thinking of, unless the point was to obfuscate?

You mean why was he mentioned at all? Because Mary was his wife just as the genealogy says.

Mark's gospel had already said that Jesus was the Son of God so this is not entirely unanticipated.

Actually, up until this week I had no evidence anyone ever read my posts. Thanks for the welcome.

Okay. I thought it might be something like that. It must be awfully time consuming reading through posts looking for book titles, or is there some sort of fancy software that grabs them?

Okay, let me see if I have learned my Amazon link lesson correctly. Bart Ehrman discusses docetism in his book Lost Christianities: The Battles for Scripture and the Faiths We Never Knew (or via: amazon.co.uk). I don't know that it's the best treatment of the subject ever, but he does cover it.

Okay, that seems to work but it underlines the title instead of italicizing it-Phhbbt!

Moderators read through all the posts anyway, looking for rules violations, etc. It's pretty easy to add the amazon URL once you get the hang of it.
