Rather than derail this thread, I thought I'd spin this off for discussion. As a puritanical, soul-destroying hag myself, I'm obviously too biased to see any truth in this statement. Is this the common consensus?

Is there a yearning for a Stepford Wife among more men than we realize?

Exactly how are western women destroying souls? Is it that we expect due consideration for our needs and point of view? That we realize a major relationship changes our lives on so many levels and we want to be sure the balance of the changes comes out positive for us and those for whom we are responsible? Do we challenge and question too much?

Hmmm, I'm trying to remember what it is about my womanhood I don't like, other than I'm not particularly enamored with the cycling hormonal thing. Guess I'll have to get back to you about that.

You know, I don't even give a rat's ass what he thinks of western women (and by extension, me). He's free to think whatever the hell he wants.

And I'm free to say that I think it's a pretty stupid sentiment, but fortunately, I'll never, ever have any interaction with him whatsoever.

I've met a few women who, by virtue of being shrilly puritanical, have destroyed souls (i.e., dear old Mom).

But I think it's more accurate to say that Western women destroy their own souls -- by shouldering too many non-existent demands and trying to live up to artificial standards of "Wife, Mother, Career Woman, Lingerie Model, and All Around Superwoman." Where these demands come from is another argument in itself, but they're there. Who can be happy under all that?

Let's face it, the majority of women in the U.S. (and by extension, the "Western" world) could stand to relax and have a little fun with their femininity. On the other hand, non-Western women could stand to speak up and stop being treated like second-class citizens. Balance, balance, balance.

In my personal estimation western culture has not been producing enough "puritanical" women lately. (If by puritanical we mean self-respecting and strictly adherent to a moral code) As a matter of fact, I am often surprised at how easily young women and girls let themselves be labeled with negative terms, like "bitches" or "hos" or even something more seemingly neutral, but actually objectifying, such as "hotties", etc and even seem to revel in it, thinking these terms make them seem somehow more grown up or desirable. Young women in western culture are encouraged to be "sexy" and this seems to imply that they should behave sexually and many do, even at very young ages.
As for destroying the souls of others; perhaps those who believe such a thing should first realize that one cannot nourish in others that which has not been recognized within oneself (whether we call it 'soul' or 'humanity' or any other term). Western culture, I feel, is striving to protect and nourish all people; but allowing commercial media and (often much) parental indifference to damage young women's self esteem and to then berate these women and the culture as a whole seems thoughtless.

Me, well I have met a few women who I find having less than desirables traits, but they have been largely overwhelmed by the number of knuckle dragging men.
