I agree with Lawrence of Arabia, and I'll add Woody Allen's stunningly gorgeous ode to his town: Manhattan. I don't think there is a single shot in the entire film that is short of beautiful, and the Gershwin soundtrack compliments it perfectly...

Default My picks

Lord of the Rings trilogy--truly breathtaking scenery and sets in all three films.

The Adventures of Milo & Oatis--a cat and a dog seach for each other after getting lost in the Japanese wilderness. Another film full of beautiful locations and adventure.

What Dreams May Come--yet again for stunning scenery and sets.

Gattaca is very well shot.

And I've heard that Girl with a Pearl Earring is very beautiful (nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Achievement in Cinematography), but I haven't seen that one yet.

Thank god! Another person who's seen Hero!!! I've been singing that movie's praises since I saw it last summer, for much the same reasons that you listed. I notice that you live in California. Is it playing there in theaters? It was never released here in North Carolina, and I would love to see it someday on the big screen.

Other movies that are beautiful:

I have to second the LOTR trilogy. A breakthrough in digital manipulation of colors in film. The New Zealand landscape helped too.

Amelie -- not so much ravishingly beautiful as visually unique. How often do you see red and green used in such a way that does not remind you of Christmas?
