Gentlemen,
Thank you for all of this good information and please, keep it coming. I'm writing a research paper on book banning and censorship in the Christian era and any help with references will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again... |

About the Congregation of the Holy Inquisition, the official information is here :
http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/08026a.htm But it is very very softened... Nay-Sayer, you are perhaps not aware that excommunications have been pronounced against people during the 20th century ? In France, two people, as far as I know, were excommunicated, Alfred Loisy, and Prosper Alfaric. About Alfred Loisy, there is a paper in Wiki. About Prosper Alfaric, nothing in Wiki, not much in french on internet. Here is a biography of Alfaric : Prosper Alfaric (1876-1955). He was professor of history of the religions at the Faculty of Letters (literature, philosophy, languages) of Strasbourg from 1919 to 1945. He wrote many books of erudition, mainly about the origins of christianity. For his opinions, he was excommunicated by the Catholic Church, on July 19th, 1933. He belonged to the Union Rationaliste. He was born in a very poor family of wine-growers.When he was young, he entered in 1888 a catholic seminar at Rodez (SW France). He was ordained priest in 1899. His very modest origins inclined him towards the modernist version of catholicism. During his formation, he was influenced by the discussions about the Bible, which were very active around 1900 in France. He read "la Revue Biblique" of the father Delagrange, and especially, "la Revue d’Histoire et de Littérature religieuses" of Alfred Loisy. In 1908, Loisy was excommunicated for his opinions on biblical exegesis. In 1909, Alfaric left the church, went to Paris, got a licence in philosophy in 1910, and began to write a thesis about Saint Augustine, with a complement about the Manichaean scriptures, which were known by Augustine. He got his diploma in 1919, and was admitted as a professor at the University of Strasbourg. Between 1919 and 1955, he wrote many articles about the problem of Jesus, and published, in 1925, a study about "the Jesus of Paul" in which he supported the thesis of a mythical Jesus. |

PROSPER ALFARIC
Note that excommunication did not lead to the burning of his books, since the church no longer has that power. Quote:
