Default IIDB/Christian Forums Thread Continuation LXI (The Crazy Eddie Point)

Welcome to the IIDB/Christian Forums thread on IIDB.

As many of you are already aware, this thread has developed what some might call "a life of its own" here, and has been continuing for quite some time. This most recent version of the thread was split from here.

As some of your may be aware, there are are other forums here at IIDB. We have a lot of interesting conversations around here, and you might think about joining in. Unlike CF, theists are not restricted in where they may post, although please note that the secular community forums restrict certain kinds of content.

Quickly, let's review the most pertinent rules to this thread:

1. The rules here at IIDB prohibit insulting, flaming or attacking IIDB members. For a list of people that are registered both here and at Christian Forums, please see the members list at:

http://www.iidb.org/vbb/showthread.php?t=149006

If you are not on the list and would like to be, or would like to update or correct your information please PM Spherical Timedirectly. Only people that the moderators of IIDB are aware are members are protected under this policy, but self-banned members at IIDB are still protected here, as per administrator ruling.

2. PMs (Private Messages) may be posted only with the permission of the sender. This includes messages posted to private and staff forums, such as the Staff Appeals forum at CF, and messages sent in an official capacity. While it would be churlish for a staff member of any site to refuse such permission under most circumstances, if they do, we expect that to be respected.

The previous threads bear many different names, and can be found through the following links:
IIDB/Christian Forums Thread Continuation LX (Damn Right She'll Rise Again)
IIDB/Christian Forums Thread Continuation LIX (Oh, Stop Giggling.)
IIDB/Christian Forums Thread Continuation LVIII (The Teen Heartthrob Vatican)
IIDB/Christian Forums Thread Continuation LVII (Self-Medicated with Cheese)
IIDB/Christian Forums Thread Continuation LVI (Cadbury Chocolate Eggs and Vodka)
IIDB/Christian Forums Thread Continuation LV (We Are Not Afraid!)
IIDB/Christian Forums Thread Continuation LIV (What Keeps Mankind Alive?)
IIDB/Christian Forums Thread Continuation LIII (Orthodoxy and its Discontents)

The Master List of past CF/IIDB Threads may be found here.

Special thanks to Shannon for creating the old users list, and thanks to everyone here for respecting the other people that post here, and keeping this little community thread going.

I don't think accepting a privilege means you endorse the denial of that same privilege to others at all. That sounds like survivor's remorse. Flaunting your luxuries in the faces of others is one thing, but to have them and use them normally is nothing to be ashamed of.

It isn't an all or nothing game.

It all comes down to what's fair or not. Using what is fairly available to you isn't unfair to anyone. Bragging that you have that ability is unfair. You can both have and use something and still be fair to those who don't. It comes down to how you treat other people. That is honestly the only fairness any of us has control over. We can't force others to treat everyone fairly, I don't think that would be, well, fair. We can conduct ourselves in a manner which is the fairest of our abilities and hope others do the same. We can't expect fairness, we have to show it. It is up to each individual to decide if they shall conduct themselves fairly towards others.

The same token means we also have to recognize that someone else's fair may look very different from our own. Which means ascribing motives or judging another's lack of fairness isn't genuinely fair either. It happens, and I don't think it is always completely unfair. When we start doing that, we have to look at ourselves and question why. I think it is in that why the unfairness in ourselves comes out -- be it unfair to someone else or unfair to ourselves.

Saying your acceptance of a privilege is endorsing unjust denial of the same privilege isn't being fair to yourself. Or to everyone else who has the privilege.

It shouldn't be about condemning things so much as standing with those who have been condemned. Often it is knowing you aren't alone that is more important than actually righting a wrong.

So be fair to yourself seebs. You stand with a lot of people, no matter who agrees or disagrees with you. You don't have to become the least common denominator to let people know they matter.

The thing is, Toe, while I agree that it's not always a problem, right now there is an issue where people are able to pretend that only "heretics" are being denied icons. This is a good way to help them think about this as an issue that affects "us", not just "them".
