Maybe you are not all-seeing then. In which case you must be blind.

But the more I learned about religions and history the more clear it became until those doubts disappeared. I still wonder even today how all those seemingly smart educated people can cling to such absurd ideas.

Why don't you invite her here to read these boards and see all of the people here who overcame those same fears?

The entire Universe is catholic, but is it RE-gular or ir-RE-gular. What is the difference between religion and RE Legion, and what is the difference between RE and RA?

In your opinion.

How would you think of Paradise, Garden of Eden style?

Would it be run by RA, or by RE, and which One would you prefer it to be run by?

Light,

I'm not sure what you mean by your post, but I ask you to look over the guidelines for posting in this folder.

Thank you,

Hello Roland98. Iwas just pointing out that even when you are "secular" you still remain catholic.

Buddhists are catholic too.

Everyone is.

I guess that all depends on your definition of catholic.

Some selected definitions from www.dictionary.com :
Quote:
1. Of broad or liberal scope; comprehensive: The 100-odd pages of formulas and constants are surely the most catholic to be found (Scientific American).
2. Including or concerning all humankind; universal: what was of catholic rather than national interest (J.A. Froude).
3. Catholic
a. Of or involving the Roman Catholic Church.
b. Of or relating to the universal Christian church.
c. Of or relating to the ancient undivided Christian church.
d. Of or relating to those churches that have claimed to be representatives of the ancient undivided church.
Let's look at these: #1 could be seen to imply open-mindedness with regards to people, and this is definitely not the case for everyone. #2, I have a hard time adapting to people, so it does not show that everyone is catholic. The third is exclusive to a certain religious sect.

... and a second set ...
Quote:
1. Universal or general; as, the catholic faith.

Men of other countries [came] to bear their part in so great and catholic a war. --Southey.

Note: This epithet, which is applicable to the whole Christian church, or its faith, is claimed by Roman Catholics to belong especially to their church, and in popular usage is so limited.

2. Not narrow-minded, partial, or bigoted; liberal; as, catholic tastes.

3. Of or pertaining to, or affecting the Roman Catholics; as, the Catholic emancipation act.

Catholic epistles, the epistles of the apostles which are addressed to all the faithful, and not to a particular church; being those of James, Peter, Jude, and John.
Again, #3 is right out! #1 does not apply, and #2 again is wrong (example: Fred Phelps).

So, Light, please enLighten us as to what you mean by 'catholic' and how it applies to us all.

I'm spinning this off and sending the "Everyone's Catholic" portion over to GRD.

Does this mean you want to go to someone elses paradise? In my paradise I am in charge for how else could their be peace in heaven? I seems like you know as little about paradise as you know about Catholics.

I am an atheist. Before that I was a non-practicing protestant. I've never set foot in a catholic building and everything I know about that church comes from my ex-catholic friends (and all that I learned after becoming an atheist). Ergo there is no way I can be considered catholic. I predict that this thread will be residing in ~Elsewhere~ shortly.

But if we invent our own definition of "~Elsewhere~", every thread in the universe is in ~Elsewhere~. Isn't that fun to do?

My mother tells me that I am a quarter Catholic - she seems to thing that religion works like genetics.

Apparently, I'm...

1/4 Catholic
1/4 Methodist
1/2 Protestant

...in that my mother had a Catholic and a Protestant parent (which caused no end of trouble to my Catholic grandmother's family) and my father had a Methodist and a Protestant parent.

Me? I try to get her to understand that religion is something you choose to have - rather than something you are born with - and that I choose to be atheist and have none.
