I think when Jesus said "Love your enemy", he was saying something incredibly powerful. It is only when you hold every word reported as jesus', as being sacred, is it even necessary to regard this as a literal command. As you point out, it is a challenge to those who are so taken with their own correctness (like many of those who have posted on this thread) that they can vilify others at will. I dont believe he ever meant "Succeed at loving your enemy"; instead he was asking us, when we villify others, to look seriously at our own congruence, at our own standards and whether we live up to them; whether we are genuinely better than those we condemn. To my simple mind, this is a profound challenge. To others, I guess it isnt. But I am always learning. |
