Some Christians say that Jupiter is a corruption and deification of the biblical Japheth. Wikipedia has this:

I just came across this today... would any of you have any info on this? Is it spurious scholarship or is it fairly well backed up? (if that's possible)

Jupiter is usually considered to be cognate to Greek Zeus Pater or Deus pater = father god. Any connection to Japeth sounds fanciful at best.

I guess I deserved it, but it was an honest question and now I know better. That’s how we learn sometimes, by asking dumb questions.

My first clue should have been that ONLY Christian sites were making this etymological claim. I stumbled across it doing some research on Jupiter trying to verify some of the “Christ Myth�? etymology claims. “Jove Pater “

My bitch was not about the gullible, but about the inventors of the stupidity. They simply don't check their claims. Someone wakes up one day and thinks, for no other reason but serendipity, that it must be so, then spreads the good word, and hundreds of dullards are foisting the rubbish on unsuspecting shills. You choofed off here and asked about it. They just spread it.

This is a generic problem. Someone wakes up with an idea. It must be so. It is disseminated as being so. One accepts the tradition, because one belongs to the culture which disseminated it. This is the case with the church fathers. They believed what they received. We have a bunch of xians trying to attack the christ myth theory by arguing a reality based on the traditions the church fathers received. They believed what they received from "trusted sources". It doesn't matter to us whether it was right or wrong; it matters that it was a trusted sources and so was obviously right. That's how it becomes right. People too often confuse tradition with fact.

Please listen to my general rule of thumb: trust no English speaker bearing etymologies. You'll be sorry nine times out of ten, if you do.

Oh, and look here. And use the site in the future for your average etymological query.
