Default Asking the 20th Century's oldest philosophical question

Why in the world is shampoo and soap not sold in the same area. I always find the shampoo. Its simple, its usually one whole aisle, but the soap, which should be next to the shampoo, is no where to be seen. I walk maybe a couple minutes, trying to find the soap, which is always hidden next to other stuff. I ponder to myself, why in the world would they seperate perhaps the two most connected products in the entire grocery store? Why do so, if not it being a conspiracy by the Health and Beauty aid companies who are afraid if people walk in one aisle and buy what they actually need. That these companies have conspired to hide the soap, so you walk up and down aisles repeatedly, looking at all these health and beauty aids, and the companies just know that after even a little exposure, people will begin to buy their products. I mean, that's the only common sense reason I can come up with.

Yeah? Try finding cotton swabs. They put those in the most nonsensical locations, at least at the stores near me :banghead:

Why are hot dogs sold in eights, and buns sold in sixes?

And why is the obvious "fiction" section of the Brooklyn library not labeled in the directory, but filed under "Multilingual, language sources, and fiction"?

Sorry -- was very frustrated yesterday while trying to find a book.

At the local supermarket they have the hot sauce in two places in the store.

Half of it is on one side of the store, and the other half of it is on the other side. Granted, both places make sense. Some of the hot sauce is next to the rest of the burrito/taco supplies, and some of the hot sauce is in the condiments section.

But why put them in two seperate places?

It's a strategy to get you to wander the aisles, gazing at all the other products you just must buy!

The most glaring example of this is that the two items perhaps most commonly purchased in stores, milk and bread, are typically located at the back of the store, and also quite often on opposite ends of the store.

To generalize, I find that the items I most commonly buy in a grocery store tend to be located much farther away from the front of the store than items I seldom buy, and commonly purchased items are spread across the entire store. I think that's a general strategy; make people walk the aisles as much as possible; they'll often pick up and buy something they didn't intend to buy.

Another strategy; locate quantities of like items that are not among the most commonly purchased items, and which might lend themselves to impulse buying, in more than one place; that way, those aisle-wanderers are more likely to encounter them. That's why hot sauce is in condiments (because it is a condiment and that's where someone specifically looking for it will look first), by the burrito/taco supplies (if you buy taco shells, then why not pick up a jar of picante?), and also quite often by the chips (gotta have dip).

Absolutely! And they rearrange the shelves periodically so you will have to wander around.

They're in the same aisle in my grocery store. Guess this is one more proof that Publix really is superior.

I figured they put shampoo there because it's where all the other hair products are? They need to put conditioner with shampoo but you can't put conditioner with soap so they put them all under hair products.

A lot of times they do spread stuff so you walk around and buy more on your way. They put lunch meats on the other side of the store as bread and they put sliced cheese over in the dairy section. Separate from the meat and the bread. You have to go all around the store just to make a sandwich =P

They make hotdog buns and hotdogs in different numbers because it’s a conspiracy between the hotdog companies and hotdog bun companies to make it so you always have extra buns or hotdogs so you will always have to go to the store and buy more so you don’t let them go to waste. You buy buns and hotdogs, you eat them all. Then you have extra hotdogs so you go buy more buns, then you have too many extra buns and buy more hotdogs... next thing you know you’re fat because you eat too much hotdogs. :banghead:
