On July 18, Larry King did a show on UFOs. He brought in some people who worked on the US missile defense, who said that UFOs have disabled over 20 nuclear missiles (and other defense systems, such as communications) in the past 50 years.

What do you guys think of this? Real, fake, or maybe just some unkown natural phenom. And if it's real, why would UFOs disable nuclear missiles?

It's hard to understand just on the basis of what you say to make an evaluation.

If the units were disabled, then what was observed as to how they were disabled.

Well, they observed a pulsating, glowing, red UFO that would shoot a beam of "light" at the missile war heads and then they would malfunction. This apparently happened to 10 missiles in a row.

Future Indefinite

I saw that show. While in theory there is every good reason to accept the existence of otherworld intelligences (e.g. the sheer size of the universe, the huge no of galaxies, the ever increasing number of stars with orbiting planets detected etc) the evidence produced by the proponents on that show was not convincing.

The assumption was that the alien beings are similar to us in attitude and concerns. There is no reason to assume this. Re the disabling of the nuclear missiles, the reasoning was that the aliens are protecting humanity from itself…that they are benign god substitutes whose great interest is to take care of us. It would be nice if it was true, but I recognize “projection” when I see it.

Just as humans over the millennia have made their gods in their own image, so now are the UFO proponents are making aliens in our own image as well.

When will we learn that we are not the center and most important component of the entire universe?

Physicists and Cosmologists are only now beginning to recognize the possibility of the existence of parallel universes, virtual worlds with simulated life experiences and a whole range of possible existences for intelligent entities. If we have been visited, which is entirely possible, isn’t it more likely that the aliens have emerged from something like this…rather than being just like us humans, only bigger and better?

Just because some projection of benign god-like intentions is placed upon the UFO activities doesn't mean that the activities are not happening. There is so much out there from reputable sources; something is certainly going on, IMO.

False dichotomy: either it's natural, in which case of course we would have the answer, or it's aliens.

There are many other possible explanations, including phenema that we may never be able to identify but are yet totally earthly in nature. (I favor the Communist Plot, a ubiquitous conspiracy of my youth that seems to have disappeared... or has it?)

Okay, I guess I'll be the hard-ass. Which is more probable, that mysterious aliens are really doing this and our (oh so capable) government is covering it up, or some guys are lying to sell books? My money is on the fact that they are lying for money. People do it every day, and I don't see any difference here.
