and as to the question of 'what has Roger ever done' (or however it was put) - I've said it once, I'll say it again. Roger has done more for the advancement of understanding early Christianity than almost any living person I know of. I guess it's like living in a Republican bubble or something but I keep finding myself accessing his work at tertullian.org or reading his blog. I don't know if this means other people use his material as often as I do, but it's been incalculable for my own development - because I'm so lazy.

I've been meaning to go to the university library for a month now (they have a toll bridge from the 'eastside' where I live to the city of Seattle). In any event, let me give Roger a plug. He's working on translating the Hymns Against the Heresies from Ephrem the Syrian and posted one of the hymns just the other day. I mean, this is priceless. It can't be overstated how important this is.

And to put this in context - my comments are screened at his site and I am still this effusive with praise for the man. I wouldn't let me post on a blog either.

Thank you for your very kind comments, and for coming to my defence (although, in truth, I had not noticed and have not seen whatever comments you are referring to). I'm glad you liked the Hymn 23 against heresies; I have a commission out for a proper translation of Hymn 22, and I will try to get 23 and 24 done properly.

Of course Earl is quite right to point that my labours to make texts accessible do not mean that I am correct on any religious or political point of view that I might care to put forward (!). Disagree with me by all means (short of character assassination, for preference). Such arguments must be tested by evidence, I would have thought. I don't much care for arguments from authority, myself, on any subject of controversy; and, as an amateur, I have none anyway.

All the best,

Roger Pearse

So what are we supposed to do with the ancient historical evidence from the epoch before the Renaissance such as Codex Vaticanus, Codex Alexandrinus, Codex Sinaticus, Codex Bezae and the Nag Hammadi Codices? Whatever you are refering to here is not the study of the history of the Bible outside itself. You are trying to take the ancient historical mystery of christian origins and sweep it under the carpet of the Renaissance.

Treat them as Bible. Or not.
