There were indeed.

The Petronian Society Ancient Novel Web Page

Works like
  • Chaireas and Callirhoe
  • Ethiopian Story
  • The Ephesian Romance
  • Daphnis and Chloe
  • Leukippe and Kleitophon
  • Apollonius King of Tyre
  • Apuleius's Golden Ass

However, some Xian apologists claim that this genre of literature had not existed in the Greco-Roman world.

Were there any non-fiction writers in antiquity besides the canonical Gospel authors ?
I think the word 'fiction' belongs to the theatre of absurd as nothing can be conceived to exist in our imagination unless it exists in reality first, except maybe not in that same order and so all writings have a core of truth in it.

Well, if that is true we must first define fiction, or not even make it topical as non-sense is what makes the theatre known.

I think the Greeks made this clear with the sound of a galloping horse that did not exist until the speaker heard it for himself and then could say: there goes that horse again.

Most, maybe all, of these date from after 100 CE.

Well, explain what effect your bait had when the Romans CRUSHED the Jews at the time of Simon Bar Kokhba.

At c 70 CE the Jewish Temple was burnt to the ground, Jews were killed by the tens of thousand and starved to death.

According to you some kind of effective "bait" was laid by the Jews with the Gospels for subersive political propaganda.

But 60 years later, c 135 CE the Jews were almost WIPED out by Hadrian. Half a million Jews were killed by the Romans and OVER 1000 villages and towns were BURNT to the ground.

Your supposed "bait" effectively BACKFIRED on the Jews.

According to Cassius Dio, 580,000 Jews were killed, 50 fortified towns and 985 villages razed.
See Wikipedia.

Your proposal that the Jews wrote the Gospels as subversive political propaganda is not substantiated at all.

When do you think the Gospels were composed?

Or rather in light of the many threads on this subject that we have both been participants in, when do you think -that I think- the Gospels were composed?
I'll give you a clue. NOT before c 135 CE.

My position is these subversive Jewish writings were composed IN THE LATE SECOND CENTURY CE in response to those constant depredations that threatened to WIPE out the Jews.

As I stated earlier, they were the products of a people 'whose backs were against the wall' They used the only weapon they had left, and the one that they were the most skilled in the use of, The words of Scripture, to turn back and to discomfit their enemies into turning their swords against each other.

I find my explanation for the origin and rapid dissemination of these texts to be reasonable, logical, and rational;
No miracles, no real Jebus, no apostles, and no drawn out real 'christian church' history.
Only fabricated subversive 'disinformation' propaganda' that was produced and distributed by Jewish operatives working in the key Gentile cities during the late 2nd and early 3rd centuries CE.
Their oppressing enemies swallowed this papyrus 'disinformation' ploy hook, line, and sinker and were deflected into ages of killing each other.

that should actually say: "saw and heard it for himself and then he could say: there goes that horse again [without seeing it].
