Pilate existed according to extra sources, though he is a bit on the other side, as it were. There are probably a few other non-Yahweh worshippers such as Cyrus the Great who wandered into the story who are referenced.

I love it when characteres wander into the story... "WTF!!...I was just having lunch when all of a sudden I wandered into the story...Who did it this time?...Josephus?...Again?...Well I ought to... " Or when the pope(JP II) watches the movie by Mel Gibson and says: "Yes,that is EXACTLY how it happened...Play it again,Sam..." It's by now a free for all...Jesus on the potato chip...Mary of the underpass... |

Nebudchanezzer, Cyrus, Josiah, Pilate, Annaeus, JBap, Quirinius, the Herods and the Caesars are known to have existed historically. Paul probably existed. There exists an inscription which may or may not contain a reference to a "House of David." There may be a few minor references to other real kings or political leaders that I'm forgetting.
The bottom line is that while some real historical figures are referenced or play secondary roles, virtually none of the primary players of the Bible can be corroborated historically. |

I believe there are Assyrian inscriptions referencing King Ahab and Hezekiah. Also there is a bas-relief of Jehu bowing before the Assyrian monarch.
There's something called the Mesha stele which is was written for a Moabite king who I think is mentioned in the Bible- I believe this stele also refers to the Omrides or Omri himself. |
