Quote:
When a man is standing there right in front of you and says "believe in me", he's not telling you to hold firmly to the article of faith that he existed.
But that's not what's going on re: God. There is no sign of God anywhere at all. The only case for God is the man standing before you saying "believe in this thing that neither you nor I have ever seen but exists because these ancient storytellers say so."

I don't see any basis for "believe X or be punished" in the text. It's been reinterpreted substantially over the years, but every time Jesus talks about judgment, it's about judging what people do, or what kind of people they are, not their opinions.
Mark 16:16
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

John 3:18, 36
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already .... He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Acts 16:30-31
Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.

And it's made abundantly clear by Gods' advocates that in order to "truely believe", you have to believe everything...including the rediculous, the impossible, the unjust, and the absurd.
