Hello,

The Golden Rule is thought of as being Christian but where in the NT is it found? If it isn't there, maybe we should try and learn the history of why people think it is.

Thanx,
Clarice

Thanks, Toto. It is commendable that a Christian is acknowledging that the Golden Rule didn't originate with Christianity.

Matthew 7:12 and Luke 6:31.

The more interesting question is why it does not appear in either Mark or John. If it is a really important concept to Jesus, then why isn't it emphasized more?

Of couse, some claim that the Golden Rule is actually derived from the commandment to "love your neighbor as yourself" from Leviticus 19:18 in the Old Testament. Jesus is known to be preaching from the Old Testament, so that might make sense as the translation goes from Hebrew to Aramaic to Greek.

Ah, never mind. From one of Toto's links:

All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
The Gospel of Matthew Matt 7:12, Luke 6:31

I could really use some help on the history of the Golden Rule for a 9-11 memorial speech I plan to give where I will be representing atheists, agnostics, humanists, etc.. at an interfaith 9-11 memorial gathering.
Sounds good. Can you please post a transcript of the speech?

There doesn't seem to be anything original to Christianity.

Not so at all. The idea that the Jewish Messiah had to be executed for the redemption of sin and would be resurrected and come again in spirit is a purely Xian invention.

Mt. 7:12 and Luke 6:31 are more like sarcasm and the NT wants us to go one step further and love our enemies (oxymoron). The Golden Rule sums up the laws and the prophets but Jesus wants us to love the unlovable eg. love your dentist and not just those who love you.
