It may seem dumb, but having been beaten with Bible Stories since I was small, it was one of the hardest things for me to have a change of mind about after my transition to agnosticsm. This won't make any sense, but they seemed to have more basis in reality, or legitimacy, in my mind than say a Greek or Norse myth. I guess I had never learned how to approach the myths of the Bible by calling them just that, myths, until I went and took some courses on religion. As soon as I started looking at them that way, on the same playing field as others religious books, I was able to free myself from the irrational 'truth' of most Bible stories. And then I saw exactly why Christians are so fervent about not calling the Bible myth...

Well you grow up believing it is the truth. This is a bit like learning that Lincoln had slaves, Washington lived in Austria, and Elvis is dead. . . .

Nope - International Communications Research. The full details of the poll are here, but something damn strange is going on. According to their figures 24% of people with "no religion" believe the biblical creation story is the literal truth. Very odd.

I still cannot comprehend why there are intelligent, theistic scientists out there. What hypocrites! Their entire means for survival is based on the scientific method, yet they cannot and will not use the scientific method when dealing with religion. Who can account for that?
