The important point is equally about whether or not it actually happened, and about whether or not the Bible depicts it as actually happening.

It might be good news that some hypothetical god does not condone genocide afterall, but it comes at the expense of completely undermining that hypothetical god.

If the Bible is just a bunch of BS, why then believe what it has to say about magic men in the sky either?

The Christian is stuck with an evil Biblical god, or no Biblical god at all.
