So in other words, slavery was common at that time and in that culture, so it was somehow morally acceptable?

Isn't that saying that the culture defines the morality? Do you really want to go down that road?

Anyway, it could have been God’s direct voice or might not have.

I have the TEN COMMANDMENTS that I know is written to have come straight from God’s voice…and it says…THOU SHALL NOT KILL!

I see. And please tell me, why does God in the Bible approve - and even order - complete extermination of enemy nations?

All right, you'll tell me that those verses are not inspired by God, either. This brings us to another question: how do you determine which verses come from God and which don't? And how do you know that ANY Biblical verses are of a divine origin?

If I remember correctly, the above isn't contained in the ten commandments, but in the NT. Apparently they are not all that is necessary.………..just T-H-I-N-K about it for a second.

I've heard some folks answer questions about why God seems like such an angry, vengeful, and judgmental type in the OT, but gets a little bit nicer in the NT, by saying that had to be harsh while civilizing us, but once we reached a certain level of social maturity he was able to introduce "higher" teachings via Jesus.

So what I don't understand is, why'd he stop giving revelations there? In the last two hundred years human society has changed more drastically than it ever did in the previous 2,000 years and more. We have problems and challenges the ancients never dreamed of. We also have within our grasp the tools to eliminate hunger and disease and to colonize other worlds. So why can't God do something really dramatic to make everybody stand up and take notice, and follow up with a few new commandments to help reduce the population and manage technology more effectively? Why doesn't he appear in a fire that burns but does not consume, and give us his direct opinion on stem cell research?
