CANON XXII.
Of sponsors in baptism.

Men shall not hold females at the font, neither women males; but
women females, and men males.

CANON XXIII.
Of the prohibited marriages of spiritual brothers and sisters from
receiving them in baptism.

The canons are also interesting. The traditional view is that there were twenty canons at Nicaea. The Arabic text preserves many more. What the hell is this?

A tradition that something of the kind had taken place was prevalent in parts of the East, and some collections did contain seventy canons.

I think this means for example that if Paul becomes godfather to John then John becomes the spiritual sister to Helen the biological daughter of Paul and John and Helen are therefore forbidden to marry.
