Far be it from me to defend the koran, but in this case,it has to be said that Mo' specifically forbade infanticide:


17:31 Slay not your children, fearing a fall to poverty, We shall provide for them and for you. Lo! the slaying of them is great sin.

At the time, it was fairly common practice in Arabia to abandon or kill infants if they were seen as a burden on the family's resources.
