It's also completely off point with regards to Ehrman's book. It's ludicrous to suggest that a discussion the Johannine Comma should be left out of a book which is specifically ABOUT how Biblical texts were altered over time. Ehrman is also presenting this book to a lay audience and it should not be expected that they would already know about it.

The book is NOT about what kinds of theological formulas can be extropolated from the text, it's only about what the text IS.

In Britain, the title of Ehrman's book is 'Whose Word Is It?'

LMAO! Have you ever read about the shenanigans at the Robber Synod of Ephesus in 449? Cyril of Alexandria bussed in goon squads from his monasteries to barricade the roads after his bloc got there, allowing in only a few from Constantinople and the Legate from Rome. He then called for a vote that excommunicated both the Bishop of Constantinople and the Bishop of Rome. This was the major reason for the Council of Chalcedon in 451, which reinstated Rome and Constantinople and excommunicated/exiled Cyril of Alexandria. LOL. The theological doctrines were almost incidental.

Yes, I see your point...

FWIW the 'Robber Synod' was the responsibility of Dioscorus, Cyril's successor as bishop of Alexandria. Cyril (who died in 444) was a brutal political operator but he generally avoided going right over the top.

Exactly. In the midwest where I grew up, it is considered by many to be a heresy to read from a non King James bible. The fact that the KJ is still so widely used and contains the Johannine Comma without so much as a footnote makes this a valid discussion for laymen.

Exactly. Ehrman only talks about specific theological formulae as the motivations for the changed text. This is necessary to ascertain which version of a text is the most likely to be original. Scribes rarely change text to make it theologically less sound.

I picked Misquoting off the History Book Club and liked it, but found it basically a layman's primer. Useful, but a bit too shallow after some of the readings (both books and here) I've done. I'll have to look for that one.

Two quick points.

I didn't know he was going to be on the Daily Show and I actually caught maybe 10 minutes of the interview which I believe would have probably have been most of it.

Any recommendations on the reliability of the book?

badger3k and others,

Can we get more reviews and thoughts on Orthodox Corruption of Scripture?

Bart Ehrman is one of the very best biblical scholars in the world and anything he puts out should, at least, be paid close attention to. I am not sure what you mean by 'reliable' but the book will be completely factual in its presentation of data, however, that does not mean that his every conclusion is necessarily correct. Everybody I have talked to who have read Misquoting Jesus thinks it is great. However, Orthodox Corruption of Scripture is a superior book, the best I have ever read in this field. It is the book that prompted me to get much more serious about my studies and to be as scholarly as possible in what I read. It is a complicated book and not for lay people, whereas Misquoting Jesus is.

By reliable, I meant factually accurate. I hadn't heard of Bart and I will pick up Misquoting Jesus for the layperson's understanding as well as Orthodox Corruption of Scripture, because I too, value scholarly references.

Thanks!
