I could add a couple more candidates for 'gods' in Christianity. Firstly, in catholicism the Virgin Mary is widely worshipped as a god. The late Karol Wojtyła (AKA Pope John II) was quite heavily into this particular superstition. Protestants don't go in much for Mary-worshipping, but I think the Bible would possibly count as another god in protestantism.
I agree with John A. Broussard's comments about religions needing to create more gods to make ordinary people feel more in contact with the religion. In Christianity, the clever method used is to create a surrogate supernatural 'family' for you to feel part of, with 'God' as father and Mary as mother. |
