When the Bible and Jesus say to love your neighbor, it would have been extremely helpful if it had defined "neighbor."

It would be nice to see who added what and when.
Richard Friedman has done something similar with Old Testament (I don't remember now if its just Pentateuch). Different sources in different colors.
I know. I have the book ("The Bible, With Sources Revealed") and would heartily recommend it to others.

But - scholarly though it is - it is still only the result of theorising, and not as good as if we knew without a doubt who had written what (and when, and preferably also why).

Well articulated Dean Anderson.

The WHEN underpins the name of Pharoah
for issues related to the Hebrew texts, and the
WHEN underpins entire new textament.

The theorising that is "permitted" in "Biblical History"
without access to this fundamental cornerstone of
the chronology separates this field from the more
scientific field of ancient history.

The WHEN is (IMO) more important that all else.

Even the NAME and the PURPOSE are subservient to
universal medium of ancient historical chronology
to provide the appropriate relational aspect of
the commonly agreed passage of time to the unfolding
of any and every presentation of "history".

I wish it had a bibliography for all the stories stolen from the Sumerians.

The meandering discussion of slavery has been split off here

I don't. I'm glad that it endorses slavery. Why give theists more reasons to embrace myth as reality? Of course two hundred years ago it would have been much more useful condemning slavery.

Uh, Tigers, look at what your request was:

Your terminus a quo was the death of Jacob, which is why I gave scriptural references which establish that Jacob died after spending 17 years in Egypt. My other reference, Exodus 12:40-41, gives the total time that the Israelites were in Egypt, 430 years, so the answer to your question is 430-17=413 years. Though your specified terminus ad quem is "the crossing of the Red Sea," 413 years is still accurate, since the amount of time between the exodus and the crossing of the Red Sea was a month or less (compare Exodus 16:1 to Numbers 33:3).

No, the contradiction still stands, as I outlined in greater detail in the thread referenced above.
Hmm. I have to look at that thread.
