Hey just wanted to start a thread so that we can recommend books to each other on the topic of bibical history.., both NT and OT

The book that i am reading at the moment and recommend is called The Bible Unearthed: Archaeology's New Vision of Ancient Israel and the Origin of Its Sacred Texts (or via: amazon.co.uk)

There isn't a lot in the recommended thread. I'd add the following at least:

• Who wrote the Bible? (or via: amazon.co.uk) Richard Friedman - very readable account of the documentary theory of the OT. Also a great background on the local history of the area.
• Who Wrote the Gospels? (or via: amazon.co.uk) Randel McCraw Helms- not bad - not as good as the above, but interesting.
• Who Wrote the New Testament?: The Making of the Christian Myth (or via: amazon.co.uk) Burton Mack - A different perspective to the above.
• A History of God: The 4,000-Year Quest of Judaism, Christianity and Islam (or via: amazon.co.uk) Karen Armstrong. Found it a bit heavy going myself, but some good stuff in there.
• Asimov's Guide to the Bible: The Old and New Testaments (2Vols. in One) (or via: amazon.co.uk) Isaac Asimov. An excellent secular guide to the Bible. Goes through each book in turn digging out interesting facts.
• The Bible with Sources Revealed (or via: amazon.co.uk) Richard Friedman - spells out the documentary theory authors in different colours and fonts. The intro is good too.
• The Hidden Book in the Bible (or via: amazon.co.uk) Richard Friedman - takes the documentary theory to the next level.
